Expat Organizations in Warsaw

American Friends of Warsaw (AFW)

This organization was founded in 1993 by a group of Americans who saw a need to organize social, cultural and educational programs for the expatriate community. The founders quickly realized that not just Americans were interested in what was offered so the organization’s name was broadened to: American FRIENDS in Warsaw.

AFW is an all-volunteer, multinational group composed of individuals who want to make the most of their time here in Warsaw and contribute positively to the community.

International Women’s Group (IWG)

Founded in 1982, IWG operates as a social organization for English speaking women.  The primary focus of IWG organized activities is to assist members with making their stay in Poland a fulfilling opportunity.  The group’s activities are of interest to the expatriate spouse, who is not the working partner in their household, as well as like minded women residing in and around Warsaw.

Party Supplies

GO Dan
http://godan.pl/index.php?mode=home

Located at Złote Tarasy, the company has been operating since 1991, mostly in Łodz, opening this Warsaw store when the mall opened.  It is a small store compared to what I am personally used to, but they do have a good selection of Disney character themes including princess themes for girls as well as superhero themes for boys. They carry plates, cups, napkins, party favors, goody bags and balloons - latex and mylar.  I am not sure if they have helium, but if they sell balloons they may have a tank or know where you can have the balloons inflated.  Costumes are also available.

Webmaster’s Note: If you are from the USA where you are used to having someone bag your groceries, this is the store for you.  The staff is very helpful and they bag groceries as they scan.  It is very helpful when you have an infant who begins crying while you are checking out.  They also scan in your client number prior to scanning your items so that when you finish you can pick up your already printed Faktura Vat.

Carrefour Express Białołęka

Globi Pirenejska

Webmaster’s note: This French chain has both large hipermarkets as well as smaller, more manageable supermarkets.  Carrefour has bought the smaller Champion and Globi chains.. I have shopped at the Carrefour Express at Sadyba Mall.  Since it changed over from Champion, the selection there has improved.  It is a much more organized store. Because of its small size, it can get cramped waiting in line especially on weekends and holidays.

Webmaster’s Note: A small shopette chain with many locations throughout Warsaw .  Newest location will be opening at the Sadyba Mall. This store is good for everyday staples (milk, eggs, etc) that you may run out of before your next big shopping trip.

REAL

Locations:

Janki - ul. Mszczonowska 3
Marki -
ul. Piłsudskiego 1
Okęcie - al. Krakowska 61
Praga - ul. Jubilerska 1/3
Ursynów - ul. Puławska 427
Wola - ul.
Połczyńska 4

Webmaster’s Note: Real has a great selection.  I shop there when I do not have my children with me.  However, in my personal experience, I have never left Real with all of the items I place in my cart.  There is always an item that is missing its price or bar code.  The cashier has one job: to scan your items.  She will not bother calling in a price check.  Unless you are willing to go get the item price checked yourself (which is hard to do when you are with your child, bagging your own groceries or have a long line of customers behind you), you will not leave with the item.  The cashier will not help you bag your groceries even if your infant is screaming and there is no one in the line behind you. During the holidays, they sometimes have volunteers bagging groceries for tips.  You usually have to make the line for your Faktura VAT after you make your purchase and wait for it to print out. It is a good store as far as products, but customer service is lacking.

TESCO
http://www.tesco.pl

Locations:

ul. Czumy 3
ul. Czerska 4/6
al. KEN 14

ul. Kondratowicza 39
ul. Kwiatkowskiego 1

ul. Pabla Nerudy 1
ul. Młynarska 8/12
ul. Światowida 41
ul. Rogozińskiego 1
ul. Wolska 71/73
ul. Toruńska 92

Webmaster’s Note:  This chain from the UK has a good selection, but I sometimes have trouble finding everything I need.  You do not have to weigh produce at Tesco before purchase.
